The Book

“What matters most is the deviation itself: a deliberate use of contradiction that Zeng was not afraid of incorporating into his practice.”

Philippe Dagen, art historian and critic. Professor of History of contemporary art at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne

“For Zeng, making art is an act of questioning the significance of life under harsh conditions – in other words, his art leads us to question again the meaning of the sublime and death in human life in the context of eternity.”

Fumio Nanjo, Director of the Mori Art Museum. Curator, art historian and director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Nagoya from 1986–1990.

Published together with The Fanzhi Foundation for Art and Education, the Zeng Fanzhi Catalogue raisonné. Volume I 1984–2004 is a combo made of three volumes contained in a canvas-wrapped box, and is available in both a Collector’s Limited and Standard Edition. The result of long years of research and tracking across various sources, this publication constitutes a landmark compilation documenting information about every single confirmed work by the artist. The publication covers the first 20 years of the artist’s career (1984–2004), including his early works, the Hospital, Meat and Mask series. A number of previously unknown and unregistered paintings have been added to his oeuvre, so that an accurate, complete, and authoritative presentation of his body of work is shown.

Zeng Fanzhi

Zeng Fanzhi (b. 1964) currently lives and works in Beijing. His diverse painting practice has established him as one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Reflecting the spirit of his time, his art shows a strong interest in both portraiture and abstraction as a response to his self-exploration of individual experiences and emotions. Constantly redefining and reinventing his painting practices, he has produced a rich oeuvre of works – including the notable Hospital and Meat series, followed by the Mask, Portrait, and Abstract Landscape series – with many aesthetic breakthroughs and an apparent co-existence of contradictory languages in his creative process. His works have been exhibited worldwide, and are collected by various museums and private collectors.
